The Haiku Project, winner of the University of Salford’s Create Award, is a multi-platform alternative pathway to wellbeing inviting its community to reconnect with nature by practising haiku. With its Zen-inspired aesthetic ideals, writing haiku helps people to focus on the ‘here and now, ’ and it teaches them to appreciate simplicity. Since 2022, Giorgia (founder and facilitator) has been delivering in-person and online workshops to people around the world, exploring the history of haiku, haiku writing techniques, aspects of Japanese culture, and how Zen philosophy can be applied to everyday life.
In 2023, in collaboration with The Wee Sparrow Poetry Press, The Haiku Project published To Live Here: A Haiku Anthology. The anthology invites writers to embrace the theme of ‘home’: our connection with nature and the urban environment, and how climate change is affecting us and our habitat.
In this in-person workshop, after reading a Zen koan, you will be introduced to haiku, a form of Japanese short poetry, and its masters. You will gain a deep understanding of how haiku has evolved over the centuries, from Bashō to contemporary writers. You will also explore how haiku impacts and improves your wellbeing. Then, you will learn the craft: how to write a haiku, understand its formal features and use them to better translate your ideas onto the page. A 30-minute writing session will allow you to practise what you have learned and to take some time to reconnect with yourself and the environment. At the end of the workshop, there will be some time to share your writing with others, if you wish, or simply to ask questions to Giorgia!
