Why You Should Try Macrame Classes in London

By ClassBento Team

It’s been a rough year or so for the millions of Londoners who have been affected by the global pandemic. If you’re looking for a new hobby to occupy your days and keep your mind active, why not try a London macrame class? Getting stuck in a creative activity can be good for your mental wellbeing, as well as teaching you a new skill.

Introducing macrame. If you’re not already on top of the craze that’s been sweeping Pinterest, macrame is a form of fiber art that is used to create everything from decorative wall hangings to plant holders and even jewelry.

Macrame has been around since the 1700s and regained popularity in the 1970s, before disappearing a few years later. Thanks to Pinterest, millennials have revived this age-old relic and turned it into a modern art form. Macrame is easy enough for beginners to pick up, and projects can be as complex and detailed as you want them to be.

Still not convinced? We’ve put together a few reasons why you should try your hand at macrame classes in London, just once - because we guarantee you’ll get hitched on the craft, just like we are!

1.Increase your wellbeing

Being creative is good for your mind, body, and soul. Having to focus on a task can take your thoughts away from the stresses of everyday life as you become engrossed in the repetitive motions of hitching. Light your favourite scented candle, put on your favourite music, and let your macrame project unfold. Don’t worry too much about creating the perfect piece – the beauty of macrame is in its imperfections. Focus on unwinding, and take it knot by knot – you’ll discover a sense of calm and mindfulness as you lose yourself in the craft.

 2.Try something new

You may have spent a considerable amount of time indoors during the pandemic, so why not get out and try your hand at something new? Learning a new skill can be challenging and adds positive stimulation to your mind. It’s always exciting when you get the rope to go the right way, or you learn a new knotting technique. And even if things don’t go to plan, it’s completely okay - there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

Attending macrame classes means that you’re fully supported as you navigate the craft. It takes time to learn something new, and macrame classes are a great opportunity to develop your skills in an encouraging environment.

3.Get creative

You don’t have to be the next JMW Turner or Banksy to get creative. Even if you don’t consider yourself a ‘creative person, you won’t leave a macrame class without a unique, handmade macrame piece. The skill it takes to carefully tie knots, the thought that goes into the shape, size, and colour of your piece, and the motivation to begin your project is all part of the creative process.

Even the fact that you decided to attend a macrame class without knowing anything about the craft means that you thought outside of the box. There is no single definition of creativity, and we all have it in us – we just need the opportunity and a supportive environment to be able to unleash it.

4.Learn about the history

Contrary to popular belief, macrame isn’t a new fad. In fact, the earliest recorded macrame was in the 13th century, when Arabic weavers finished off the loose ends of their hand-woven textiles with decorative knots. In third-century China, decorative knot-tying was also common in wall hanging and ceremonial textiles. The art form also moved through Europe, particularly in Spain, Italy, and England, where people from all walks of life would incorporate the decorative knots into everything from bell fringes to wedding veils.

In the Victorian era, macrame was commonly found in household items such as table cloths, curtains, and bedspreads. Thankfully, this art form has been handed down from generation to generation across the world. When you make your own piece in one of our macrame classes, it’s like holding a little bit of history in your hands which we think is pretty cool!

5.Grow and connect

Attending a macrame class (or any class!) isn’t just an opportunity to learn a new skill – it’s an opportunity to grow. You’ll learn a little bit about the world around you, meet some new people, and also build confidence in yourself. If you’ve been feeling isolated lately, coming to a macrame class can be a much-needed breath of fresh air.

6.Macrame makes for awesome London team building activities

We didn’t say you had to attend macrame classes alone! If you’re looking for unique team-building activities in London, why not come down to a macrame class? It’s a fun, lighthearted approach to getting to know your colleagues.

You can work towards each other’s strengths, and help each other when things get a bit fiddly. If you like a bit of healthy competition, there’s nothing like a creative activity to bring the team together. You’ll each come away with a new piece, and have some fun stories to share.

7.Celebrate together

Searching for hen party ideas or birthday party ideas? Or perhaps you’re on the lookout for baby shower ideas? The great thing about macrame is that it’s not limited to a specific demographic – anyone of any age can give it a go. Not only does it help to build relationships, but macrame classes can be a unique activity to do in London. Treat your friend, brother, mother, or daughter to a macrame class that you can do together – they’ll thank you for it!
